About Thicklip grey mullet

The thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) is a silvery schooling fish with a blunt head and a thick upper lip lined with small warty bumps. Those bumps are the best way to tell it from the thinlip and golden grey mullets. The body is torpedo-shaped with large scales, dark above and pale below, and the two short dorsal fins are set well apart. Typical length is around 30 cm, but it can reach about 75 cm and 4.5 kg. It lives along shallow, sheltered coasts and often moves into brackish water and estuaries. It grazes mainly on algae, diatoms and organic sediment, along with small invertebrates. It spawns in winter, and both eggs and fry drift in open water. In Norway it is most common along the south coast and the outer Oslofjord, with records north to Trøndelag. Anglers value it as a wary, hard-fighting fish that is difficult to hook. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
