About Daubed shanny

The daubed shanny (Leptoclinus maculatus) is a slender, eel-like fish in the eel prickleback family. It reaches up to about 20–23 cm and has a long spiny dorsal fin that runs almost all the way back to the tail. It lives in cold northern waters of both the Atlantic and the Pacific. In Norwegian waters it is especially common around Svalbard, where adults and young occur in large numbers in the fjords and along the ice edge, even in sub-zero water. It has been recorded from a few metres down to several hundred metres. The young feed heavily on Calanus copepods and store the energy in a special fat sac on the belly, which makes them a rich food for seabirds and other fish. Growth is slow, and maturity comes at around 6–7 years. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
