About Mediterranean scaldfish

The Mediterranean scaldfish (Arnoglossus laterna) is a small left-eyed flatfish and the only member of its family in Norwegian waters. Its body is slim and oval, and the small head carries large, closely set eyes and an oblique mouth. The scales are thin and loose and rub off easily, and the fish is a translucent, pale greyish brown with small dark spots. In males some of the front dorsal fin rays are elongated. It reaches about 25 cm, but rarely more than 20 cm in Norway. The species ranges from Angola and the Mediterranean north to Shetland and Norway, where it is scarce and mostly known from the south and west coasts up to Trøndelag. It lives over sand and mud on the continental shelf, from shallow water down to around 200 m, and eats small crustaceans, worms and little fish. Spawning takes place from May to August. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
