About Atlantic poacher

The Atlantic poacher (Leptagonus decagonus) is a small armoured fish of cold northern seas. Its long, slender body is covered in hard bony plates, and its head is narrower than that of the hooknose. The Norwegian name tiskjegg, meaning ten beards, comes from the eight to ten long barbels under the chin. It grows to about 20 cm. The species ranges across northern seas from Newfoundland and Greenland east along Siberia to the Sea of Okhotsk. In Norwegian waters it is common in the Barents Sea and further north, and it also lives in cold fjords in Finnmark. It is most numerous north of the polar front. It lives on the bottom, usually in deep water, although it has been recorded from the shallows down to about 900 m. Numbers in the Barents Sea dipped in 2004–2014, probably as it moved north-east in warm years, but have since recovered. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
