About Poor cod

The poor cod (Trisopterus minutus) is a small member of the cod family. It can reach about 40 cm, but in Norway it rarely exceeds 25 cm. The back is reddish brown, the belly silvery, and it has large eyes, a projecting upper jaw and an obvious chin barbel. Its big scales rub off easily. It is easily confused with pouting, but is slimmer; a line drawn straight up from the vent meets the rear end of the first dorsal fin in poor cod, and the middle of that fin in pouting. In Norway it occurs from the Swedish border north to Nordland, mostly over sand or mud at 10–150 m, sometimes deeper, with juveniles close inshore among boulders. It forms shoals and eats crustaceans, worms and small fish, and spawns in spring. Anglers mostly meet it as a bait-stealer on small hooks near the bottom. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
