About Black goby

The black goby (Gobius niger) is the largest goby in Norwegian waters. It has a sturdy, fairly deep body, a rounded snout and two dorsal fins set close together, the rear one reaching almost to the tail stalk. It is dark brown with indistinct black blotches, and a black spot marks the front of the dorsal fins. Breeding males turn almost completely black. Black gobies grow to 18 cm but are usually 5 to 10 cm. They range from West Africa to Norway and into the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea. Along the Norwegian coast they are common in shallow water up to Trondheimsfjorden. They live on sand and mud and among eelgrass and seaweed, from the surface to about 50 to 75 m. They eat crustaceans, worms and bivalves. Spawning is in summer, and the male guards the eggs in a nest. Small baited hooks from jetties will catch them. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
