About Chub

The chub (Squalius cephalus, listed by Artsdatabanken as Leuciscus cephalus) is a thickset member of the carp family with a large, broad head and a wide mouth. The body is long and almost round in cross-section, with large dark-edged scales forming a net pattern. It is greenish brown above, silvery to golden on the flanks and pale below, with orange-red pelvic and anal fins. It resembles the ide but is slimmer, broader across the head and bigger-mouthed. Elsewhere it may reach 60 cm and several kilos, but in Norway a fish of 1 to 3 kg is a big one. Chub favour rivers with good current and larger lakes. Young fish shoal, while big chub are often solitary. They are omnivores that eat insects, crayfish, berries, plants and small fish, and spawn in May and June. In Norway it occurs naturally only in the lower Haldenvassdraget, Glomma and Drammenselva. It is a wary, popular angling fish. It is Least Concern.

2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
