About Roundnose grenadier

The roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris) is a deep-water rattail with a large, rounded head, a blunt snout, big eyes and a body that narrows sharply into a pointed tail. It is brownish grey, while its mouth lining, gill chambers and fins are almost black, and it has a small chin barbel. It can exceed 1 m, though most are far smaller, and it is very long-lived, with fish over 50 years old recorded. It occurs along the whole Norwegian coast but is most common in the deep fjords of southern and western Norway, the Norwegian Trench and the Skagerrak, usually below 300 m. It stays near the bottom but rises into the water column to feed on shrimps, other crustaceans, squid and small fish. Because it grows slowly and matures late, targeted fishing in the Skagerrak was halted in 2006. Some deep-fjord anglers catch it on heavy rigs. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
