About Common dab

The common dab (Limanda limanda) is a small, right-eyed flatfish of the plaice family. Its upper side is light brown or greyish brown with scattered darker speckles. It resembles plaice and flounder but is easy to identify: the scales on the eyed side are rough, so it feels like sandpaper when stroked from tail to head, and the lateral line makes a clear arch over the pectoral fin. Most are 20 to 25 cm, rarely over 40 cm and about 1 kg. Dab live on sandy bottoms from a few metres down to about 100 m, eating worms, small crustaceans and brittle stars. They spawn in spring and early summer. It lives in coastal waters of the northeast Atlantic, including the Norwegian coast. It is often caught on worm or small baits from shore and boat, and is good to eat. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
