The pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) is a small, brightly coloured freshwater sunfish from eastern North America. It has spread to much of Europe and several other continents. In Norway it was first found in 2004 in a pond in Asker, and has since turned up in a number of small lakes and ponds in Østfold, Oslo, Akershus and Buskerud; the 2023 Norwegian alien species list rates it as very high risk (SE). It favours clear, shallow, weedy water. The body is deep and flattened like a seed, with an orange to yellow belly, greenish to blue flanks speckled with orange, wavy blue lines on the cheeks and a black gill-cover flap tipped with red. Most are 10–15 cm and few exceed about 25 cm. In summer the male fans out a nest in the shallows and guards the eggs and fry. Any Norwegian finds should be reported to Artsobservasjoner, and fish must never be moved to new waters.
