About Norway bullhead

The Norway bullhead (Micrenophrys lilljeborgii) is the smallest sculpin on the Norwegian coast, rarely exceeding 6–7 cm. It resembles the longspined bullhead but is smaller, with one long and three short spines on the front gill cover. Rows of sharp prickles run along the bases of the dorsal fins, giving the back a rough feel, and there is a tiny barbel at the corner of the mouth. It is reddish to olive brown with darker blotches, and breeding males develop reddish spots on the head and sides. It lives on weedy stony or gravelly bottoms, from the shore to about 80–100 m, hiding among rocks and algae, and feeds on small crustaceans and tiny fish. Spawning happens in early spring, with eggs laid in clumps on the seabed. It occurs around the British Isles and along the Norwegian coast north to Nordland, and was first described from the Hardangerfjord. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
