About Common mora

The common mora (Mora moro) is a deep-sea fish of the family Moridae. It is found in temperate seas around much of the world, usually on the continental slope at roughly 300–2,500 m. In Norway it was first recorded in 2007, when one was caught on rod and line off Hitra, and since then the Institute of Marine Research's reference fleet has logged several hundred along the deep shelf and the Egga edge. The fish is grey to grey-brown, often with a metallic sheen, and has a big, blunt head, very large eyes and a short chin barbel. Its two anal fins are clearly separated, a useful field mark. Most are up to about 45 cm, with a maximum of around 80 cm. It feeds near the bottom on fish, squid and crustaceans. The Norwegian rod-caught record is a 3,170 g fish from Suladypet off Frøya in 2020. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
