About Solenette

The solenette (Buglossidium luteum) is the smallest sole found in European waters, usually 10–13 cm long and rarely more than about 15 cm. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms, often half buried, from a few metres down to a few hundred metres, although it is most common in fairly shallow coastal water. Its range runs from West Africa and the Mediterranean north to the North Sea, Kattegat and the western Baltic; in Norway it is only a rare visitor in the south. The easiest field mark is the fin pattern: every fifth or sixth ray in the dorsal and anal fins is dark, giving the fin edge a striped look. The pectoral fins are tiny and the mouth is small and curved. It feeds on small bottom animals such as crustaceans, worms and bivalves. It has no commercial value and is mostly seen as trawl bycatch.
