About Transparent goby

The transparent goby (Aphia minuta) is a tiny goby, usually just 4–5 cm and rarely up to about 8 cm. It is almost entirely see-through and can be mistaken for the crystal goby. Unlike most gobies it stays off the bottom and swims in shoals in open water, mostly in shallow coastal areas and estuaries. It has been found from the surface down to about 100 m, typically over sand, mud or eelgrass. It lives for only one year: it matures at about a year old, spawns in summer and seems to die soon after. The eggs are laid on the bottom, often inside empty mussel shells. Its range runs from Morocco to Norway, where it is found along the southern coast and north towards Trondheim, and it also lives in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. In southern Europe it is sold as a delicacy. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
