About Greater weever

The greater weever (Trachinus draco) is a long, side-flattened fish. It is yellowish brown to grey with slanting dark and bluish stripes. It is Norway's best-known venomous fish: venom glands sit at the base of the first dorsal fin spines and of a strong spine on the gill cover. A sting causes intense, immediate pain and swelling. The venom breaks down with heat, so the recommended first aid is to soak the area in water as hot as you can bear (40–45 °C) for 30–90 minutes. The species occurs from the Swedish border to Trondheimsfjorden and south to the Mediterranean. By day it lies buried in sand or mud, usually at 1–30 m, ambushing shrimps and small fish. It spawns in summer. Most are under 15 cm, but it can reach about 40 cm. Weevers take bait from both shore and boat; unhook them with pliers and great care. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
