The European river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis) is a jawless, eel-shaped fish with a round sucking disc instead of jaws and a row of seven small gill openings behind each eye. Adults are dark olive-brown to grey above, pale below, and measure 20–50 cm. It differs from the smaller brook lamprey by a clear gap between its two dorsal fins and by its stronger teeth. Adults spend one to three years in coastal waters or large lakes, such as Mjøsa, attaching to other fish to feed on blood and tissue. They then run up rivers and streams and spawn over gravel from April to June, after which all adults die. The larvae live buried in soft sediment for several years, filter-feeding, before transforming into adults. In Norway it occurs mainly in the south-east and south, west to Rogaland and the Bergen area. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
