The longspined bullhead (Taurulus bubalis), also called the long-spined sea scorpion, is a small sculpin with a big head, a thick front body and a tapering tail. It reaches about 17 cm. Its colour matches its surroundings, usually green, brown or olive with pale blotches and dark bands, and breeding males develop a reddish belly. Look for the long spine on each gill cover and a small skin flap at the corner of the mouth. It is common along the whole Norwegian coast and across northwest Europe, from the tide line to about 30 m, on rocky ground and among seaweed. It lies in ambush, well camouflaged, and grabs prawns, small crabs, molluscs and little fish such as gobies. Spawning takes place in spring; the eggs are laid among algae and guarded, and the young spend a period drifting offshore. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
