About Brown bullhead

The brown bullhead (Ameiurus nebulosus) is a small North American catfish, the only catfish living wild in Norway. It has a broad, flat head with eight barbels around the mouth and a scaleless body, dark yellowish to olive brown and often mottled. The first rays of the dorsal and pectoral fins are stout spines, and there is a small adipose fin in front of the tail. Most are 20 to 30 cm and 100 to 200 g, and it rarely exceeds 1 kg. A nocturnal bottom fish of soft-bottomed lakes and ponds, it copes with warm, oxygen-poor water. It eats midge larvae, mussels, fish eggs and small fish. In summer a pair builds a nest in shallow water, and the male guards eggs and fry. Released in Asker around 1890, it is still found mainly there and in a few ponds near Oslo. It is an alien species rated low risk (LO) in Norway.
