About Freshwater bream

The freshwater bream (Abramis brama) is one of the largest members of the carp family in northern Europe. Its body is tall and very flattened, with a humped back and a small mouth that extends down and forward as it roots in the mud. Young fish are silvery and older ones bronze; the fins are grey to dark, never red. It resembles the smaller silver bream but has more rays in the anal fin. Most weigh 0.5 to 3 kg, and the biggest reach about 75 cm and 8 to 9 kg. Bream favour nutrient-rich lakes and slow rivers with soft bottoms, where shoals feed on midge larvae, snails, mussels and other bottom animals. They spawn in May and June in weedy shallows. In Norway the species lives mainly in the south-east, with scattered populations towards Trøndelag and Agder. Float and feeder anglers target it with sweetcorn, worms or bread. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
