The boarfish (Capros aper) is a small, deep-bodied fish named for its pig-like snout. Its mouth can be pushed forward into a short tube to snap up prey. The body is oval and strongly compressed, with large eyes and stout dorsal spines, and it is reddish to salmon pink, sometimes with golden or darker bands. Most are under 12 to 15 cm, and the maximum is about 20 cm. It lives in the north-east Atlantic from West Africa northwards and in the Mediterranean, over the shelf and upper slope, usually between about 40 and 700 m. It feeds on small crustaceans, and most of what is landed becomes fishmeal. In Norway it is a rare visitor and practically never caught on rod and line. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
