About Greater argentine

The greater argentine (Argentina silus) is a slender, silvery deep-water fish with big eyes, a small mouth and a small adipose fin behind the dorsal fin. It resembles the lesser argentine but grows bigger and lives further north. The species occurs in the northeast Atlantic from East Greenland to the North Sea and Skagerrak, and in Norway it is found on deep banks and in fjords from the Skagerrak and the Norwegian Trench north to Troms, Finnmark and Svalbard. It usually lives between 150 and 1,400 m in schools close to the bottom. It can reach about 70 cm. It is fished commercially by trawl for fishmeal and food, under regulation, but is rarely caught by recreational anglers. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
