About Golden redfish

The golden redfish (Sebastes norvegicus, formerly Sebastes marinus) is a stocky, vivid red fish with large eyes, big scales and spines on the head and dorsal fin. It can reach about 1 m and 15 kg, but most are well below 60 cm. It ranges from the Skagerrak along the whole Norwegian coast to the Barents Sea and Svalbard, and westwards to Iceland and Greenland. It lives along the continental slope and in deep fjords, mainly at 100–500 m, feeding on krill, other crustaceans and small fish. Like other redfishes it bears live young, releasing larvae in spring and summer. Growth is extremely slow: it matures at around 10–15 years and may live more than 60 years. The Norwegian stock has declined sharply and ICES has long advised against any fishing for it. It is listed as Endangered (EN) on the Norwegian Red List 2021, so check the current rules from the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries before keeping one.
