About Dragonet

The dragonet (Callionymus lyra) is an elongated bottom fish with a broad, flat, triangular head, a long snout and eyes set high on top. A strong, hooked spine sits on each gill cover. Males are among the most colourful fish in Norwegian waters, yellow and brown with vivid blue stripes and spots, with a greatly elongated first dorsal ray. Females and young males are plainer brown with dark blotches along the sides. Males reach about 30 cm and females about 25 cm, but most are around 15 cm. The species lives on sand and mud down to about 200 m, feeding on worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates. In spring the male displays to the female with spread fins. It occurs along the Norwegian coast and is a frequent bycatch for anglers using worm or small baits over sand. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
