About Graceful eelpout

The graceful eelpout (Lycodes gracilis), also known as Vahl's or gracile eelpout, is an eelpout with a long, slender body and a fairly small head. Typical size is 25–30 cm, but it can reach about 50–56 cm. Colour ranges from light grey to dark brown, often with small black dots along the flanks, and the front of the dorsal fin usually carries a few dark spots or bands, a handy field mark. The dorsal, tail and anal fins merge into one long fringe. It lives near the bottom on mud, mostly at 50–540 m in cold water. Its range covers the eastern North Atlantic and nearby Arctic waters, from east Greenland and Iceland to Svalbard and the southern Barents Sea, and southwards to Shetland, Skagerrak and Kattegat. It feeds on shrimps, krill and other bottom animals. It has no fishery value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
