The greater eelpout (Lycodes esmarkii) is the largest eelpout in the North Atlantic. It has a long, slim body. The back is dark brown and the belly yellowish brown, and five to eight pale bands across the body make it easy to recognise. It lives on soft bottoms in deep water, usually between about 240 and 620 m, with records from around 140 to more than 1,000 m. In Norway it is common in Varangerfjorden and south towards Troms at 100–400 m; it also occurs off Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland. Most are under 70 cm, though fish of around 1 m have been taken near Iceland. Its diet is dominated by brittle stars and other echinoderms, plus some small fish. Eggs are laid in a nest on the seabed. It has no angling value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
