The diminutive goby (Lebetus scorpioides) is one of the smallest fish in Norwegian waters, growing only to about 4 cm. It has a fairly large head and looks a little like a miniature sculpin, hence its Norwegian name, 'sculpin goby'. Males and females differ so much in colour and shape that they were long thought to be separate species. Unlike most gobies, its fused pelvic fins do not form a cup or sucker. It lives on the bottom from about 30 m down to around 375 m and feeds on tiny bottom animals. Its distribution is poorly known, but it has been found along the Norwegian coast north to Lofoten and Lopphavet, and divers see it regularly around Stavanger. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
