About Largehead hairtail

The largehead hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) is a shiny silver, ribbon-like fish with an extremely long, flattened body that tapers to a thin thread at the end. It has no tail fin and no pelvic fins, but a long dorsal fin runs almost the full length of the back. The mouth is large and armed with strong, hooked fangs. It lives in warm and temperate seas around the globe but it is not part of the Norwegian fauna. It lives over soft bottoms on the continental shelf, from the surface down to about 590 m, most often at 100–350 m. At night it rises in the water column to hunt fish, squid and crustaceans. Adults are usually 50–100 cm long and can exceed 2 m. It is an important food fish in Asia. In many places anglers catch it from shore or boat on fish baits or lures.
