About Barrelfish
The barrelfish (Hyperoglyphe perciformis) is a sturdy, oval-bodied member of the medusafish family that has been found in Norway only a few times. It has a blunt, rounded snout, large eyes and a lateral line that arches over the big pectoral fins. It is dark brown to blackish, greyer on the sides. Adults can reach about 90 cm and 12 kg. The species belongs to subtropical and temperate parts of the North Atlantic, from Nova Scotia to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, and from Ireland to Portugal. The first Norwegian record came from the south coast in 1983. Young barrelfish live high in the water and like to gather around floating objects such as logs and barrels, which explains the name. Adults live deeper, over the continental slope at about 100 m to almost 400 m, and eat fish, squid and crustaceans. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA), as it is only a chance visitor.
