About Veined squid

The veined squid (Loligo forbesii), stripekalmar in Norwegian, is the squid recreational anglers most often hook along the Norwegian coast, often just called kalmar or akkar. It has a slender, torpedo-shaped mantle with long fins covering well over half the body length, and its eyes are covered by a membrane. It is reddish brown, and the underside carries a flame-like stripe pattern that gives the species its Norwegian name. It can grow to about 80 cm and is fairly common in southern Norwegian waters. In the fjords it tends to gather near narrow tidal sounds, usually in the calmer water just beside the main current. It can be caught from a boat all year, with the best fishing from October to January, at least in Western Norway. Ordinary jigs work, but dedicated squid jigs with a ring of hooks lose far fewer catches. Fish at 15-50 m, preferably over sand, and lift it quickly into a bucket, as it squirts both water and ink. Norway has no commercial cephalopod fishery. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

Log your catchHow to register a Norwegian record
- Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
- Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
- Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
