About Shore rockling

The shore rockling (Gaidropsarus mediterraneus) is a small, eel-like member of the cod order that lives on the shore and in shallow seaweed. It has three barbels, two on the snout and one on the chin, a short, low first dorsal fin and long second dorsal and anal fins that run most of the body length. It is mottled dark brown. It is easily confused with the three-bearded rockling, which is redder and grows larger, and with the five-bearded rockling, which has five barbels. The shore rockling reaches about 35 cm, though most are smaller. It ranges from the Black Sea and Mediterranean north to western Norway, where anglers have recorded it from Rogaland to Trøndelag. It hides in crevices, under stones and among weed in shallow water, feeding on worms and small crustaceans. Species hunters catch it on small baited hooks among shore rocks. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
