About Flapper skate

The flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius), storskate in Norwegian, is the largest skate in Norwegian waters. The fish once called the common skate (Dipturus batis) proved to be two species: the smaller, southern blue skate kept that Latin name, while the flapper skate is the one found along the Norwegian coast. The flapper skate has a large diamond-shaped body, a long pointed snout, a dark grey-brown upper side often with pale spots, and a dark grey underside. The flapper skate can reach about 2.4 m and 100 kg. It lives on soft bottoms, often at 100 to 200 m, and feeds mainly on fish, including other skates. Slow growth, late maturity and few large egg cases leave it very vulnerable to fishing. Norwegian Red List 2021: Critically Endangered (CR). Any caught should be released carefully.
