About Nursehound

The nursehound (Scyliorhinus stellaris) is a slender, bottom-dwelling shark with both dorsal fins placed well back towards the tail. The upper side is pale grey-brown to yellowish with large dark blotches and many small dots. It resembles the lesser spotted dogfish but grows bigger, has larger spots, and its nasal flaps are separate and do not reach the mouth. It can reach about 1.6 m. The species lives in the northeast Atlantic from the British Isles to Portugal and in the Mediterranean, from the shore down to around 400 m, though it prefers 20–125 m over rocky ground with seaweed. In Norway it is a rare visitor. It eats fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. Females lay large egg cases, 10–13 cm long, attached to seaweed in spring and summer, and the young hatch after 9–12 months. Populations have fallen steeply in the Mediterranean, and IUCN rates it globally as Vulnerable (VU). Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
