The Olfersii hatchetfish (Argyropelecus olfersii) is a small, silvery marine hatchetfish with an extremely deep, flattened body shaped like an axe blade. It grows to about 12 cm. The back is dark and the flanks mirror-bright, and its tubular eyes point upwards to spot prey silhouetted against the faint light above. Rows of light organs along the belly glow downwards, hiding its own shadow from predators below. It is recognised by two equal-length spines behind the belly and a double spine just ahead of the pelvic fins. The species lives in temperate waters of most oceans. By day it stays at 200–800 m, and at dusk it rises to about 100–600 m to hunt small crustaceans and fish. In Norway it is an irregular visitor off the coast and is not known to breed, so it is Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021. It has no commercial or angling value.
