Krøyer's lanternfish (Notoscopelus kroyeri) is a slim, silvery lanternfish with rows of light organs on the head and along the belly. It resembles the glacier lanternfish but grows larger and has a noticeably bigger mouth, reaching about 14–16 cm. It lives only in the North Atlantic; in the east it ranges from around the Arctic Circle south to about 37° N and occurs in the Norwegian Sea, though it is less common close to the coast. Waters around Iceland hold large numbers, and there it is counted among the most abundant mid-water fish. By day it stays deep, from about 300 m to beyond 1,000 m, and at night it rises towards the surface, often into the upper 100–400 m, to feed on zooplankton such as krill and copepods.
