About Sharpchin barracudina
The sharpchin barracudina (Paralepis coregonoides) is a long, thin, silvery-grey fish with a pointed head, a large mouth and sharp teeth. Its dorsal fin sits well behind the middle of the body, with the anal fin further back still, and like its relatives it has no swim bladder. Sources give its maximum size as roughly 30–50 cm. It is a fast mid-water predator of the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, usually living at 50–600 m, and feeds on krill, pelagic shrimps and small fish such as lanternfish. It is in turn eaten by tuna, cod, salmon and seals. In Norway it is very rare, with only a couple of verified records, mostly of large fish that probably follow the Gulf Stream north on feeding trips. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA). It has no fishing interest.
