About Snake pipefish

The snake pipefish (Entelurus aequoreus) is the largest pipefish in European waters. Its very long, thin body is smooth and round in cross-section, without the obvious bony rings of other pipefish. It has a long snout with a tiny mouth, and adults keep only a dorsal fin and a minute tail fin, with no pectoral or anal fins. The colour is pale brown to yellowish green, with a pale blue, dark-edged band on each body ring. Females reach about 60 cm and males about 40 cm. It ranges from the Azores to Iceland and Norway, and spread north to Svalbard in the 2000s. Compared with other pipefish it prefers deeper, more open water, among kelp, seaweed and eelgrass at 10–100 m. In midsummer the female fastens her eggs into a groove along the male's belly, and he carries them until they hatch. It eats tiny crustaceans. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
