The whip-tailed eelpout (Lycodonus flagellicauda) is a very thin, elongated deep-sea fish in the eelpout family. It rarely grows beyond about 20 cm. As the name suggests, the body tapers into a long, whip-like tail. A useful identification feature is a series of small bony plates along the bases of the dorsal and anal fins. As in other eelpouts, the dorsal, tail and anal fins are joined into one continuous fringe. It lives close to the bottom at great depths, roughly 800–2,000 m, in ice-cold water that is usually below 0 °C. It lives in the northern Atlantic, at 800–2,000 m in the Norwegian Sea and north to Spitsbergen. It feeds on small crustaceans. Very little is known about its reproduction. It is only seen in catches from deep-water research surveys and has no fishery value. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
