About Common rudd

The common rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) is a member of the carp family that looks much like a roach, but has brassy flanks, bright red fins and a clearly upturned mouth. The most reliable feature is that its dorsal fin sits well behind the pelvic fins. Typical fish are 20–25 cm and a few hundred grams, while the largest reach about 45 cm and 2 kg; the Norwegian record is 1.42 kg. In Norway it is native only to the lowlands of the south-east, especially the lower Halden, Glomma and Moss river systems, but people have spread it to many lakes in Agder and Rogaland. It prefers shallow, warm, weedy lakes and eats plants, algae, insect larvae, small crustaceans and snails. Spawning takes place in warm shallow water. Rudd take worm, sweetcorn or bread under a float. Outside its native range it is rated a very high-risk alien species. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
