Sars's wolf eel (Lycenchelys sarsii) is a small, eel-shaped member of the eelpout family. It grows to about 20 cm and has a long, slender body with the dorsal, tail and anal fins joined into one continuous fringe. Adults carry scales over the whole body except the head, which is a useful way to separate it from its close relative Lycenchelys muraena, where scales stop at the front of the dorsal fin. It lives on soft mud and sand, mostly at moderate depths, along the Norwegian coast from Skagerrak to the Kola Peninsula, and also across the ocean off Newfoundland. Its diet is made up of bristle worms, small crustaceans and bivalves taken from the seabed. Little is known about how it breeds. It is not an angling species and is mainly recorded in research trawls and bottom samples. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
