The Atlantic fanfish (Pterycombus brama) is a pomfret with a deep, strongly compressed body, a blunt snout, large eyes and big silvery scales. Its most striking features are the very long, tall, sail-like dorsal and anal fins, which have no scales and can be folded down into a groove along the back and belly. The dorsal fin starts right above the eye, and in young fish these fins are even taller. It grows to roughly 40–46 cm. The species lives in open water in the Atlantic north of the equator, from a few tens to several hundred metres deep, with juveniles staying shallower than adults. Spawning is thought to take place far to the south, off Florida, in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, and only adults reach Norway. Here it is a rare visitor recorded as far north as the North Cape. Its biology is poorly known. Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
