About Slender snipe eel
The slender snipe eel (Nemichthys scolopaceus) is an extraordinarily long, thin deep-sea eel that can reach around 1.3–1.5 m yet weigh only a few tens of grams. Its long, beak-like jaws curve apart at the tips and are covered in tiny backward-pointing teeth, which snag the antennae and legs of shrimps and other crustaceans. The body ends in a long, thread-like tail, and it has more vertebrae than any other known animal, about 750. It lives in open water in temperate and tropical oceans, mostly between a few hundred and a couple of thousand metres deep, though it has been caught from near the surface down to about 4,000 m. Its larvae are transparent and leaf-shaped. It is thought to spawn only once and then die. In Norway the slender snipe eel is a rare visitor that is not known to breed, so it is Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021.
