About Beaked redfish

The beaked redfish (Sebastes mentella) looks so much like the golden redfish that the two are rarely separated in practical fishing. The surest difference is a strong forward-pointing knob at the tip of the lower jaw, the 'beak'. It also has larger eyes and a slightly paler red colour. Adults are commonly 35 to 40 cm, with the biggest measured at about 70 cm. It is a northern, cold-water species: in Norwegian waters it lives in the Barents Sea, around Svalbard and along the continental slope of the Norwegian Sea, usually at 300 to 600 m. It eats krill, other crustaceans and small fish. Like other redfish it gives birth to live young in spring, releasing them along the shelf edge from the British zone to Bear Island. The stock was overfished in the past but has recovered, and it is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the Norwegian Red List 2021.
