About Brill

The brill (Scophthalmus rhombus) is a left-eyed flatfish of the turbot family. It is more oval and slimmer than the turbot, and its eyed side is smooth, without the bony knobs of its relative. The upper side is grey to brown, speckled with light and dark spots, and the blind side is creamy white or pinkish. The front rays of the dorsal fin are partly free, giving a frilly edge. Most are 30 to 40 cm, with a maximum of about 75 cm and 8 kg. Brill live on sand and gravel, mainly between 5 and 70 m, and feed on small fish such as sandeels and sprat as well as crustaceans. In Norway there is no directed fishery, but it is caught now and then as bycatch in nets or on baited rigs over sand. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

  1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
  2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
  3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
