The scale-bellied eelpout (Lycodes squamiventer) is a small eelpout from the cold northern deep sea. It grows to around 30 cm and has an elongated body with long dorsal and anal fins that merge with the tail. The colour is an even dark greyish brown without pale markings, and, as the name suggests, the belly is scaled, which helps separate it from several relatives. It lives on muddy bottoms on the deep slopes of the Barents, Norwegian and Greenland Seas and north of Svalbard, south to the slope between Iceland, the Faroes and Shetland. It has been recorded from a few hundred metres down to about 1,800 m, in water close to 0 °C. Like other eelpouts it probably eats small bottom-living invertebrates. It breeds in Norwegian waters, but its biology is little known. It is only seen in research trawls. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).
