About Arctic char

The Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) lives further north than any other freshwater fish. It resembles a trout but has smaller scales, pale rather than black spots, and a crisp white leading edge on the pectoral, pelvic and anal fins. The back is greenish brown to blue-grey, and the belly turns orange-red in spawning males. Size varies enormously, from dwarf char under 100 g to large deep-water and sea-run char of several kilos. Char live in cold, clear lakes all over Norway, and in the north many migrate to sea in summer as sea char. They feed on zooplankton, insect larvae and snails, and larger fish turn to eating fish. Spawning takes place in autumn and early winter over stones and gravel. Anglers take char on fly, spoon and worm in summer, and ice fishing for char is a popular winter pastime. How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
2. Records are based on weight and approved by a jury. You give the weight and length, where it was caught, the gear you used and any witnesses.
3. Keep your photos and notes from the catch. Logging it in FishComp does not register a record.
