The sargassumfish (Histrio histrio) is a small frogfish that lives among drifting sargassum weed in tropical and subtropical seas. Its side-flattened body is covered in skin flaps and blotches of yellow, brown and olive, making it almost invisible in the weed. The pectoral fins work almost like arms, so it can climb about in the weed and hold on to it. It grows to about 20 cm. This is a patient ambush hunter: it dangles a small lure on its forehead to attract little fish and shrimp, then sucks them in with a rapid gulp. It is also known to eat members of its own species. The fish is found in the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific wherever floating weed gathers, staying in the top few metres. Occasionally ocean currents carry it far north, and there are stray records from Norway, but it does not live here. IUCN: Least Concern (LC). Norwegian Red List 2021: Not Applicable (NA).
