About Sandy ray

The sandy ray (Leucoraja circularis) is a medium-sized skate with a short snout and rounded pectoral fins. The upper side is reddish brown, and the best field mark is a set of four to six cream-coloured spots on each wing; the underside is white. Several rows of thorns run along the long tail. Adults are typically around 70 cm, with a maximum of about 1.2–1.3 m. It lives over sand and mud on offshore banks and the continental slope, roughly between 70 and 700 m, from northwest Africa and the Mediterranean to the British Isles. In Norway it is an occasional visitor along the Norwegian Trench and off the west coast. It eats bottom invertebrates and small fish and lays its egg cases in autumn. It is not known to breed in Norway, so it is Not Applicable (NA) on the Norwegian Red List 2021. The IUCN lists it as threatened.
