About Sand goby

The sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) is one of the most common gobies on the Norwegian coast, occurring north to Troms. It is small and slender, usually 4–6 cm and at most about 11 cm, with a sandy, mottled back and a pale belly. Breeding males carry a dark, pale-edged spot at the back of the first dorsal fin, and both sexes have a dark mark at the base of the tail. It can be told from the common goby by its smaller scales and the absence of a dark oblique bar by the pectoral fin, and from the painted goby by its scaled nape. It lives over sand and mud from a few metres to about 200 m, also in brackish water. It lies camouflaged on the bottom, ambushing small crustaceans. In summer the male builds a nest under a shell covered with sand and guards the eggs. Norwegian Red List 2021: Least Concern (LC).

How to register a Norwegian record

1. Norwegian sport-fishing records are registered with Villmarksliv, not with FishComp. Read the rules before you do anything else with the fish.
