The round ray (Rajella fyllae) is one of the smallest skates in Norwegian waters, reaching only about 60 cm. Its strongly rounded pectoral fins give the disc an almost circular outline, and the snout is short and blunt. Long thorns sit on the snout, ring the eyes and line the tail. It lives on soft bottoms along the continental slope in cold water, usually at 300–800 m, although it has been recorded from roughly 150 m to beyond 2,000 m. The range covers the North Atlantic from Nova Scotia via Greenland and Iceland to the Barents Sea and Svalbard, and south to the Skagerrak. It feeds mostly on polychaete worms, small crustaceans and shrimp. Like other skates it lays eggs in tough egg cases. It lives too deep for normal angling. Its population is thought to be stable. Least Concern (LC) on the Norwegian Red List 2021 and globally (IUCN).
