The stout eelblenny (Anisarchus medius) is a long, eel-shaped fish whose single dorsal fin runs most of its length. It usually reaches up to about 14 cm, occasionally around 18 cm. Its rounded tail fin is the best way to tell it from its close relatives. This is an Arctic species found all around the polar basin. It prefers very cold water, often below 0 °C, although around Svalbard and in the White Sea it also lives where temperatures reach 4–7 °C. It keeps to soft bottoms at depths of about 10–150 m and feeds on small bottom animals such as bristle worms, amphipods, cumaceans and small bivalves. In Norwegian waters it is known only from Svalbard. It feeds on small bristle worms, amphipods, cumaceans and bivalves and has no fishery value. Little has been published about its spawning.
